PATROL

   The Patrol Division is the back bone of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. It is the largest, most diverse division, and operates around the clock as the first responders to all calls to service. The men and women of the Patrol Division handle anything from directing traffic, dealing with domestic disputes, and enforcing traffic laws to responding to major crime scenes, performing business checks at night and interacting with the community.

     We embrace the Community Oriented Policing (COPS) philosophy and believe that the citizens are our most valuable asset in tackling crime. Without the cooperation of those citizens interested in bettering their community, we would not be able to function properly.

     The Patrol Division is comprised of several different parts. The bulk of the the division is made up of four full time shifts that patrol the entire county and are the first responders to calls for service. They are the most visible in the communities everyday and conduct monthly meetings within each of the ten patrol districts.

    The second part of the division is the Community Action Team (CAT). Two teams of deputies are tasked with focusing on problems areas that may not get the attention they need from the regular patrol deputies because of calls in other areas. The deputies assigned to CAT also conduct traffic enforcement and work drug interdiction on the highways. The latest task for this team has been to put 2 full-time deputies on I-95 to work drug and contraband interdiction.

    The K-9 unit, Reserve Deputies, two full time deputies in Pinewood and Cherryvale, and most of the community outreach functions fall under this division.
