* In 2009 the Sumter County Sheriff's revised it's reporting methods to better comply with state and federal standards. Because of these changes, figures are not comparable to previous years' data.
Sumter County is 681 sq. mi. in size and has a population of 107,456 (US Census, 2010). The Sumter County Sheriff's Office has authority to enforce all state laws within the entire county and is the top law enforcement entity for the county. While we have jurisdiction throughout the entire county, our primary duty as first responders is for the unincorporated areas of the county (approximately 654 sq. mi. with 65,000 citizens).
